Wind Power

Wind Turbines

Turbines range enormously in size and power. At one end of the scale there are small machines with a blade diameter of about 1 metre, suitable for charging batteries on boats and caravans. At the other end there are off shorewind farms, which can be up to 150 metres high with an 80 metre blade span. In between there are a whole range of turbines suitable for domestic properties, schools, factories and community buildings.

Solar Ray supplies and installs a range of wind turbine systems for domestic and commercial grid connected, battery or hybrid applications.

There are a range of sizes of turbine available, from 300W up to 2 MegaW.

For Your House

Solar Ray has sourced a variety of small turbines from China and USA as well as being UK agent for Fortis windturbines from The Netherlands (Holland and windmills have a very long association) The most suitable turbine depends on your needs and location.

For Your Farm

The larger the turbine the better it performs in terms of electrical output and cost/reward.

Solar Ray sources sites and will also undertake the planning application for a site from a single self sufficiency sytem to a wind farm

Assessing Your Site

As a general guide here are several factors which will determine the suitability and potential of a site for a wind turbine.

  • The average windspeed in the area in question. This can be determined using the postcode for the property or area and using the NOAH site on the DTI web site, see link adjacent.
  • The characteristics of the immediate vicinity. Obviously, an area in a sheltered valley with lots of trees and buildings will not be as suitable as an exposed hill in open countryside, where the wind-flow would be unhindered.
  • The location. The higher a turbine is off the ground, the higher the wind speed it receives.

Urban environments can be problemmatical due to planning issues and turbulance over roof tops. However brown field sites are becoming more acceptable in planners eyes than areas of outstanding natural beauty in the countryside.
