Wood Burning
Ecology and economy in harmony
Wood contributes invaluably to the worlds energy supply and has many positive qualities. It is a renewable energy source which is available in large quantities and can be harvested when needed. Trees absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide during their life cycle and, in turn, produce oxygen.
Wood fired heating is also financially attractive in relation to the constant price increases for conventional fuels. To completely heat a detached house, 20-30m³ per year are sufficient.
There are a range of wood burners and stoves which can utilize firewood

Wood burners
After 1st September 2005 all woodburners installed on properties less than 2 hectares must have a discharge of less than 1.5 grams of particles for each kilogram of dry wood burnt, and a thermal efficiency at least 65%.

Also consider wood pellet boilers
Wood pellet boilers are a great way to heat with wood, without the hassle. Traditional wood heating needed a lot of work chopping the fuel, lighting the fire and clearing the ash. Wood pellet stoves remove all of these hassles. A wood pellet boiler will provide all the functions provided by your ordinary boiler, and can be turned on with a programmer like a standard heating system.
Unlike ordinary solid fuel boilers, these boilers are fed by means of a 'hopper feed' system which controls the rate of fuel fed into the boiler. The pellets are manufactured by compressing waste sawdust so that it sticks together naturally. Pelletised fuel will move more like a liquid, and that is what enables it to be so controllable. It available either loose into a silo or in 10-15kg bags. Fuel is delivered in 0.5 - 1 tonne lots, depending on the supplier, so suitable storage area is necessary. Wood pellet boilers are typically the size of a domestic washing machine and are best sited in a utility room.
